Chameleon's Journey Grief Camp

Entering its 11th year, Chameleon’s Journey continues to reach out to grieving children and offer help and hope as they face the death of a loved one. On October 16 and 17, 2010, children from our eight-county service area will join us at Camp Thunderbird in Lake Wylie, South Carolina for our annual overnight grief camp. Since its inception in 2000, Chameleon’s Journey, a service of KidsPath®, has served over 750 campers.

This overnight camp includes a well-planned program of educational, artistic, creative and physical activities that give campers, ages 7-16, the opportunity to express thoughts and feelings of grief and share their stories in a caring, confidential, and safe environment. Campers come away from the camp with an increased knowledge of the grieving process. They also develop new relationships to help them know they are not alone.

Each morning of the camp weekend, parents and guardians are encouraged to attend a two-hour workshop. These two workshops address adult grief, allow parents and guardians to give and receive support, and suggest ways adults can help their grieving children.  Parents and guardians do not stay overnight at the camp.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Junior League of Charlotte Healthy Child Initiative, and major donors: Build-A-Bear Foundation, Anna and Rob Carter, Claire Bear’s Fund of the Foundation for the Carolinas, The Grace and Hope Foundation, Patti and Pender Murphy, Myers Park United Methodist Church, the Rotary Club of South Charlotte, and many counselors and volunteers, Chameleon’s Journey has been a successful and rewarding weekend throughout its ten-year history. Without sponsors, carrying out our mission to promote the wellbeing of grieving youth would not be possible. Because of these many supporters of Chameleon's Journey, the camp is offered free of charge.
